How to reach Spitzkoppe?
Spitzkoppe is located 150 km away from Swakopmund, a mere 1h45-minute drive.
From Windhoek, it takes 3 hours to reach (280 km).
The road is paved all the way, except for the last 20 minutes where you need to drive on an untapped road.
Where to stay in Spitzkoppe?
The main purpose of visiting Spitzkoppe is to camp directly there. Therefore, we can only recommend to stay at the Spiztkoppe rest camp. Indeed, it is located inside the reserve. Thus, you will be able to camp at the foot of the main attractions that you came to visit.
In order to select a camping spot, just head to the reception and pay the corresponding 190 NAD / 13 USD per person per night.
NassPacker Tip : Make sure to select your camping spot strategically. Indeed, it will allow you to have the perfect night pictures. We drove to each spot and can confidently assert that spot number 1A, 1B, 1C, 4, 5 and 7 are the great spots.
If you are looking for reclusiveness then spot 1C and 7 would be the perfect ones. The entrance to 1A, 1B and 1C is very beautiful while spot 7 is even more isolated on the back side of the arch.
We opted for spot 5 as we were there during sunset. In fact, it gave us the best compromise between being next to the arch and having nice sunset views over the mountains.
Please note that the camp is very basic. Indeed, there are no showers in the camp spot. In fact, the only one in the camp is located next to the reception. Besides, the toilets are long drops.
In case you would like more comfort, head to the luxurious Spitzkoppen Lodge that features many amenities such as a restaurant, swimming pool and even WIFI.
What to see in Spitzkoppe?
Stargaze and enjoy the night sky full of stars in Spitzkoppe
Spitzkoppe does not have any particular attractions of activities. Instead, it is really for the scenery and the remote camping experience that one comes here.
Indeed, spending one night is the bear minimum when coming here as the night skies are simply out of this world.
Climb some of the hills for nice panoramic views
The connection to nature that you feel when camping here is priceless. In fact, the area is so calm and the skies so clear that you end up wondering whether you can stay there forever.
In broad daylight the place is also amazing. Thus, the place is really subject to changes in light exposition which makes it great for pictures.
Then, you can climb up few of the hills that are in there in order to get a more panoramic view of the area.
When looking also to the horizon in the opposite direction, you will see how empty are the surroundings of the reserve. As usual in Namibia, you have the amazing impression to be alone on earth.
Visit the bridge for pictures with a great background
One of the highlights of Spitzkoppe is definitely the oddly formation called “The Bridge” or sometimes also known as “The Arch”. Located in a small hill between campsite 5 and campsite 7, it offers great views.
In addition, it is a very photogenic spot especially if you are planning to take a time-lapse at night with the stars. In that case, the bridge or arch really becomes the perfect background for your photo/video.
NassPacker Tip : Before you leave the Spitzkoppe area, make sure to leave some food and water to some of the art sellers in the outskirts of the park.
Indeed, after discussing with a few of them, we realized how challenging their situation is. In addition, it seems that in the harsh environment where they are living, they only have access to brackish water.
Therefore, your still water bottles could really help them out.
After spending this amazing night stargazing in Spitzkoppe, head to the amazing Swakopmund or the magical Walvis Bay where the desert dunes meet the Atlantic Ocean.
